Celler del Roure 'Cullerot', Valencia, Spain.

Celler del Roure Cullero is a blend of white grapes from the Valencia region of Spain. It's aged in Tinijas(Clay amphora) and it shows the fresh and complex flavours of this wine. For centuries this was an integrated farm producing grain, almonds, olives and grapes with unsubtle evidence for the production of olive oil and wine – a large, stone, olive press and extensive subterranean cellar with dozens of intact 17th century amphorae. It took a few years of research and restoration but Pablo is using these clay vessels to make wine once again. Cullerot, which means tadpole, is the white that Pablo makes in the old cellar utilizing heirloom and indigenous varieties including Macabeo, Malvasía, Pedro Ximénez and Verdil, as well as Chardonnay.

A knockout Albariño from Alberto “Mister Albariño” Nanclares. It comes from vines on the cusp of old age (averaging 33 years) and sees extended lees contact, so although you get plenty of vibrant, energetic, youthful Albariño fruit to the fore, with lemon sherbet, camomile and lime, there's a gentle creaminess and textural weight that gives the wine a bit more gravitas than most. Lip-smackingly stylish. 12.9%

Luis Seabra 'Granito Cru', Vinho Verde, Portugal, Alvarinho

The 2018 Alvarinho "Granito Cru" was aged for one year in used, large-format Eastern European vats (mostly Slovenian). It comes in at 12.8% alcohol, 1.9 grams of residual sugar and seven grams of total acidity, making it a solid and fresh white with relatively little wood impact. The wood shows mostly in the texture. Smooth, caressing and able to coat the palate, this is not big on energy initially but rather seems surprisingly rich, relatively speaking. Impeccably balanced and quite seductive, it is hard to resist. Don't drink this too cold. - Luis Guitérrez, 92 pts

Domaine Pattes Loup 'Chablis', Burgundy, France

In 2004, Thomas Pico returned to work at his family estate in Chablis after several years of working in Nuits St George. ‘Pattes Loup’, which translates ‘wolf’s paws’, is the name of the parcel that his grandfather gave him that year. This was the year when his grandfather died, and Thomas remembers him saying: ‘don’t make the same mistakes I did in the vineyard.’ Within 3 years later, he shifted production to organics. Mineral and precise.

Olivier Rivière, 'Rayos Uva'

No oak, juicy and fresh, lovely core of sweet fruit, notes of earth and leather, superb. Outstanding un-oaked Rioja, freshness abounds in a swirl of mouth coating pure Tempranillo fruit. A beautiful example of how to capture the pure fruit potential of this noble Spanish variety that is so often covered with american oak and sweet vanilla nonsense. Olivier is a master of expressing ‘terroir’ and varietal character rather than wine making. Like many other biodynamic pioneers, he allows the wine to make itself and the results reveal the potential of Tempranillo and the hot Rioja region to still produce wines of exceptional freshness and vitality. Laden with young red and black cherry and plum, a slight note of fig, slightly earthy beneath, but fresh, fresh, fresh, lovely wine.

Luis Seabra, Xisto Ilimitado 'Douro Tinto', Douro, Portugal, 2018

Xisto Illimitado, by famed Douro winemaker Luis Seabra, is a Portuguese analogue to the idea of a “village” level Burgundy. A field blend of 6 varieties planted across 3 subzones in the Douro, Illimitado is a survey of the schist-driven terroir in the appellation. Luis Seabra, former winemaker at Nieeport, has focused his winemaking on the distinct soil types in the valley, and this latest project shows the breadth of style that is achievable in the region. Bright, focused and fresh, Xisto Ilimitado is a great introduction to the new Douro.

Oliver Rivière 'Gabaxo', Rioja, Spain

Floral and elegant, insinuating and nuanced, very expressive. This is different from the previous years when the wine was a 50/50 blend of Garnacha and Tempranillo. Now, there's less Tempranillo and more Garnacha, and Graciano comes into the picture. So, it's a blend of 40% Garnacha, 30% Graciano and 30% Tempranillo from different locations: Cárdenas and Rioja Baja for the Garnacha and Laguardia for the Tempranillo and Graciano. Alcohol is 13.5%, and there's very good freshness. It has fine tannins, and there's a very spicy side to it (black peppercorns from the Graciano?). It's nicely textured, long, precise, balanced and mineral. It's a serious wine that drinks well and has everything to develop nicely in bottle. - Luis Guiterrez, 93 pts.

The nose is promising, but the palate is vibrant and lively, beautifully textured with very fine chalky tannins and great focus and purity, precise and symmetric, seamless and long. Guímaro 'Finca Meixeman', Ribeira Sacra, Spain

The palate is impressive, very complete, harmonious, pungent and vibrant. The 2018 Finca Meixeman comes from one of their oldest vineyards and was produced with the varietal blend in the vineyard—80% Mencía and 20% Brancellao, Merenzao, Garnacha, Mouratón, Negreda and Sousón. Most of the reds from 2018 are 13% alcohol, which is lower than in the past and achieved through picking earlier. It spent six months in 5,000-liter oak vats and then was transferred to used 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels for malolactic and 12 to 13 months aging. - Luis Guittérez, 95 pts.

Negre de Negres, translated “Black of Blacks,” takes its name from the cepage of multiple black grape varietals used in the wine, the sum of which is greater than its parts. López de Heredia, 'Viña Tondonia Reserva', DO Rioja, 2008

The nose of the 2008 Viña Tondonia Reserva is very elegant, fresh and with an herbal twist, starting to show the complexity of the aged wines that are sometimes still too young when they are released 10+ years from the vintage! The palate is medium-bodied, with lightness and depth, very classical with extra freshness and all that is needed for a long development in bottle. This is the more Tondonia of the two vintages I tasted side by side. There are notes of maple syrup, smoke, licorice and crisp fruit. The palate is more austere, crunchy and reveals the chalkiness of the soils. There's more definition and precision here. - Luis Gutiérrez, 95 pts.
